I cannot edit a MARC/bibliographic record in the Metadata editor, why not?
Answer
When you open a bibliographic record in the Metadata editor that record becomes assigned to you, and it cannot be edited by another person in your institution until it has been released. This prevents another cataloger from modifying the record you are working on or overriding your changes.
If the record has been assigned to another cataloger, you will see View Only - Locked by at the top of the MARC record in the Metadata editor. This means that the record is currently being used by another cataloger or the cataloger has forgotten to release the record after they opened the record in the Metadata editor.
Records that have not been released by you will display to the left of the Metadata editor under MARC21 Bibliographic. It is a good idea to make it a habit of releasing bibliographic records after you have finished working on them.
To release a bibliographic record in the Metadata editor:
- Click File>Release record or Alt+Shift+R
- A pop-up box will appear and ask Are you sure you want to release this record?
- Click Yes
