How do you manage links to Primo Titles and Searches in Worldcat, GOBI, and LibGuides?

Answer

Worldcat:

Worldcat Registry lets you create open-ended ISBN or ISSN search to link to results in your library catalog.

For Primo, your search would look something like:

https://suny-gcc.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?vid=01SUNY_GCC:01SUNY_GCC&tab=LibraryCatalog&offset=0&search_scope=MyInstitution&query=any,contains,

After customizing the highlighted data for your own library and tab/scope preferences, you'd add this string to the "Online Catalog Direct to ISBN" and "Online Catalog Direct to ISSN" search boxes. It also works for the OCLC number search.

Updating LibGuides Links

If you used ISBN links for Aleph records, you can replace them with the equivalent Primo ISBN search.

If you used Aleph system number links in LibGuides, you can update those as well, but it takes a little more work:

  • Add your Aleph System Number as a searchable field in Primo.
    • Define a local field in Primo Configuration and make it searchable. Configuration>Discovery>Display Configuration>Manage Display and Local Fields

add field

  • (Add field -- Local field), select Enable Field for Search, and add the 986 (Add MARC 21 Fields -- choose 986 from dropdown) -- Add) and save it. Your Aleph system number should be stored in local field 986. Note that it doesn't matter what what your local_field_xx number is.

add local field

  • This should make the 986 field searchable

The Aleph System number search is slightly different from the ISBN search because you'll need to add your campus prefix information to the Aleph number.

For example, this Aleph link in LibGuides: https://gcc.sunyconnect.suny.edu:4729/F?func=direct&doc_number=000095349

would become: https://suny-gcc.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?vid=01SUNY_GCC:01SUNY_GCC&tab=Everything&offset=0&search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&query=any,contains,GCC01000095349

If you want to search more than one record at a time, you'd need to restructure your string like this:

https://suny-gcc.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?query=any,contains,GCC01000095349,OR&query=any,contains,GCC01000031730,AND&tab=Everything&search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&sortby=rank&vid=01SUNY_GCC:01SUNY_GCC&lang=en&mode=advanced&offset=0

  1. FYI: I sometimes want to shorten the permalink for posting on social media. Was not successful shortening via Bit.ly if the Primo search included DATE filters. I have been successful shortening such a link with TinyURL. See example below:

    Captured search link: https://suny-alb.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?query=any,contains,spiders%20poetry&tab=Everything&search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&vid=01SUNY_ALB:01SUNY_ALB&facet=searchcreationdate,include,2019%7C,%7C2019&mode=basic&offset=0

    shortened using Bit.ly doesn't work: https://bit.ly/2mstPhG
