How does the browse search work in Primo VE?
Answer
The browse search in Primo VE only works on bibliographic records stored in Alma, and does not include content from the Central Discovery Index (CDI).
- Authors, Titles, Series, and Subjects (based on a selected vocabulary) browse uses the Alma browse functionality. For information on its full mapping, see Browsing Bibliographic Headings.
- You may also browse shelf listings with call numbers of the following types: Library of Congress, Dewey, NLM, SUDOC, Shelving control number, UDC, and generic.
To activate the browse search:
- Go to Discovery>Display Configuration>Configure Views and edit your view.
- In the Links Menu tab, toggle the BrowseSearch on so that it shows in your Primo header
Change Labels:
- The browse search includes language about numbers of results. To edit this language, go to Code Table: Results Tile Labels, code: nui.results.title.resultsDisplayedNoTotal, description: Results {{resultsRange}}
Known Issues:
- Number of Results:
- The number of results for any browse entry does not always match the number of results you find when you click on the result. Ex Libris has explained that this is due to the way browse works in Alma, where the title index includes multiple fields. It appears the counter in the brief results is including occurrences in the 222, 245, etc. which are found in the same bibliographic record, so fewer bibliographic records are displayed when the user clicks on the result.
- The August 2023 release made changes to the browse search after selecting an entry with many results in the Browse Search List. In these cases, the total number of results will not display, and the user will need to page through the results to find all of them.
