How do I create a Fulfillment Unit Rule?

Answer

A Fulfillment Unit Rule is used to apply Terms of Use (TOUs) to items within a Fulfillment Unit. To create a Fulfillment Unit Rule, you will need either the Fulfillment Administrator or General System Administrator role.

There are five different types of Fulfillment Unit rules:

  1. Loan - apply Loan TOUs, which determine how items can be loaned to users
  2. Request - apply Request TOUs, which determine how your users can request items and whether other libraries can request your items through resource sharing
  3. Borrowing Resource Sharing - apply Borrowing Resource Sharing TOUs, which determine who can place resource sharing requests
  4. Lending Resource Sharing - apply Lending Resource Sharing TOUs, which determine loan and renewal periods for resource sharing loans to other libraries
  5. Booking - apply Booking TOUs, which determine how your users can place booking requests

Fulfillment Unit Rules are listed in a particular order, and they are applied in that order.  When you create a Fulfillment Unit Rule, make sure you place it above any conflicting rules.

Note: Fulfillment Unit Rules must be configured at the Institution level unless you are configuring rules for your resource sharing fulfillment unit.  Those must be configured at the resource sharing library level.  Borrowing Resource Sharing and Lending Resource Sharing rules are an option only when you're configuring your resource sharing Fulfillment Unit.

1. Go to Configuration | Fulfillment | Physical Fulfillment | Fulfillment Units.

Note: If you are configuring fulfillment unit rules for your resource sharing fulfillment unit, you will need to first select your resource sharing library from the Configuring dropdown.

5. If you need to limit how this rule is applied by user group, location, material type, item policy, job category, process type, or patron affiliated campus, click the Add Parameter link, select a parameter from the Name dropdown, select an operator from the Operator dropdown, and then select the desired parameter value(s) from the Value dropdown, and then click the Add Parameter button.  If you do not need to limit how the rule is applied, skip ahead to step 6.

Note: It is possible to create multiple Parameters for a rule.  If you do this, all Parameters must be met in order for the rule to be applied.

6. Select the TOU you want the rule to apply from the Output dropdown and then click the Save button.

7. When you create a Fulfillment Unit Rule, it will be placed at the bottom of the Fulfillment Unit's rule list.  Fulfillment Unit Rules are applied in the order in which they're listed, and it is possible that a rule will not work properly because there's a conflicting rule above it in the rule list.  If you need to move a rule up or down in the list, click the arrows next to the rule name.

Note: Changes to the order of the rule list are automatically saved even if you click the Cancel button after moving the rule.
