How do I correctly sort LC call numbers in an Analytics report?

Answer

How do I correctly sort LC call numbers in an Analytics report?

Note: Unfortunately, this functionality is only available in the Physical Items subject area.

Let's say you have a report from Analytics that contains the LC call number. But the report doesn’t sort correctly by call number:

Unsorted call numbers

To sort by LC call number, you need to add the field “Normalized Call Number” to the Criteria. You will find this in the “Holding Details” folder.

Normalized call number

Then you need to sort on the Normalized Call Number:

Sort Normalized call number

Now when you look at the results, you'll see the call numbers sort correctly.

However, now you've got this weird looking column of normalized call numbers:

Both Call Numbers in a compound layout

The solution is to hide the Normalized Call Number column using Column Properties:

  • In the Criteria tab on the Normalized Call Number field click on Column Properties.
    Column Properties
  • Then go to the Column Format tab and click on Hide then click OK
    Hide Column

Now when you run the report the call numbers are sorted properly and the normalized call numbers do not display:

Sorted Correctly

Another option to hide the column is to use the Edit view "Exclude" option from the Results tab.

Or, assuming you’re downloading the report to Excel, you could just delete the column in Excel.
