How can I create a clickable link to something like a finding aid in a print bib record?

Answer

MARC Field 856:

  • While it is technically possible to add a clickable link via MARC Field 856, the OCLC exports into Alma use normalization rules to strip these fields from bib records because they often include vendor links or links to inaccessible content owned by other libraries
  • Alma best practices require that you use an electronic portfolio, preferably in an electronic collection, to provide access to the item on the vendor's platform, rather than putting that link in an 856.
  • Any new 856 field that you add will be wiped out the next time the record is updated by OCLC or another SUNY library staff member.

Local Fields:
The best way to add a clickable link to something like a finding aid is to move your custom 856 field to a Local 974 field or add a new 974 field from scratch:

Primo Display:

  • To get your content to display in Primo VE, go to Discovery configuration>Manage and display local fields>Add field, and set up a new local field for the 974, providing label etc.
  • Then, go to Discovery configuration>Configure views>Full record services to add the field as part of the full record display in Primo.

Example:

finding aid
